Author, Playwright. 18th Baron of Dunsany. He was a pioneer of fantasy writing and an influence on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and H.P. Lovecraft. He was educated at Cheam and Eton schools, before entering Sandhurst in 1896. He inherited the title of Lord Dunsany on the death of his father in 1899 and served with the Coldstream Guards in the Boer War, before returning to Dunsany in 1901. He published his first book, "The Gods of Pegana" in 1905, and in 1909 his first play, "The Glittering Gate" was successfully performed at the Abbey Theatre, London. He reenlisted to fight in the trenches in World War I, resuming his writing career during peace time with more novels and also poetry. In the 1920's he created Mr. Joseph Jorkens, his best known character, who appeared in many of his later works. After serving in the Home Guard during World War II he made radio broadcasts and television appearances, and went on lecture tours of the United States. He died during an operation for appendicitis, having completed his last Jorkens story, "A Meeting of Spirits" only a few months before.
